Lower Dolpo Trek - 19 Days

Destination Dolpo Travels and Trekking welcomes you to the most scenic and beautiful highlands of the remotest trekking destination in Nepal, the region of Dolpo. The Lower Dolpo trek offers you a wonderful chance to experience the landscape and culture of this unique part of the country. It is located in the largest but most isolated districts of Mid-western Nepal. The highlight of this trek is Shey Phokumdo National Park, the largest national park of Nepal with its deep blue Phoksumdo Lake. Surrounded by rock, forests, and snow-capped peaks, the area has been described as one of the World’s Natural Hidden Wonders. The trek leads from the lower areas with forest up along the river beds to Phoksumdo from their over Numa-La Pass (5115m) and Baga-La Pass (5100m) , two challenging passes from where you get excellent views of the Dhaulagiri range, Nilgiri, KyangyuRipa, Annapurna range and uncountable other mountains. The remote and rugged protected area is both scenically and culturally attractive. Various rare and endangered plants grow in the area, many of which can be seen nowhere else in the country. The wildlife is fabulous. Endangered animal species like snow leopards, grey wolves and blue sheep can be observed in the national park.

This Lower Dolpo trail is popular not only for its natural and scenic beauty but also provides an insight into the local culture. Below the snowy peaks of sacred mountains ancient and isolated villages are to be discovered. Visits of monasteries of both Buddhist and Bon traditionen able a unforgettable experience. The locals are hard working warm-hearted people with great hospitality. They have great humour and vividly live their traditions. As our company founders are from this area themselves, doors will be open for direct contact with the local people and religious leaders. In this sense, trekking with local interpreters, this great “Hidden Land” turns visible and readable.

Day 1
Arrival day in Kathmandu

Welcome to our beautiful city! Upon your arrival our representative of Destination Dolpo will greet you at the airport and assist your transfer to your designated hotel. In the evening, our representative will brief you about the trip and your stay in Nepal.

Day 2
Sightseeing in Kathmandu and flight to Nepalgunj

Kathmandu is one of the ancient places in the world. Today, we will be having wonderful trips around the different World Heritage Sites around the Kathmandu valley. Some of the landmarks we visit includes the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the holy shrine of Pashupatinath, the famous Buddhist Stupa known as the ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambunath), the Bhuddhist Stupa (Bodnath also known as Boudha) and Patan Durbar square. In the afternoon, as per your flight booking you will be transferred to the domestic airport of Kathmandu to fly to Nepalgunj. Once you reach Nepalgunj Airport, you will be greeted by our representative who will bring you to your designated hotel.

Day 3
Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal & trek to Dunai

Our first day adventure begins from the Juphal airport. We will be walking downhill through Dangibara village for about an hour till we reach Kaligaura. From Kaligaura, we can see the flow of beautiful and most scenic Bheri River. The route is good and even has the transportation facility. We will be following the banks of Bheri River for a couple of hours till we reach Dunai Bazaar. Dunai Bazaar is the headquarter of Dolpo district. The camping site for tonight is the compound of Hotel Blue Sheep.

Day 4
Trek from Dunai to Tarakot

Our trail of this day is a very good one. From Dunai Bazar we will be following the upstream of Bheri River for around 3 hours till we reach the settlement of Byasghar. At Byasghar, there are some houses and tea shops, where we can rest for a while. From there, the left trail leads uphill to different villages such as Banthada, Chilpara, Bansi and the other trail leads to Dharapani and Parlä (Baijibara). Parlä contains Bon communities and Bon monastery. We will be following the bank of Bheri River to reach the settlement of beautiful Tarakot. This will be our camping site for tonight. Beautiful villages of Sahartara VDCs can be seen from the camping site.our camp is far from villages.

Day 5
Trek from Tarakot to Laina Odar

The trail of this day leads you to the northern bank of Bheri River. After hiking for around 3 hrs, we will reach Laisikap. Another camping site can be seen before we reach Laisikap, at Yelakot. Laisikap is the intersection of the Barbang River and the Do-Tarap River. As we cross suspended bridge on our left and follow the ascending trail, we will reach a beautiful village called Khaanivillage. Across the valley, a monastery called Chadul can be seen and on the left side there is a village called Khaanivillage. The hike gets tiresome while we continue to ascend uphill through the Pine forest to reach LainiOdaar. This will be our camping site for tonight.

Day 6
Trek from Laina Odar (Cave) to Toltol

The trail of this day ascends upward from Laini for around an hour. The trail is quite steep. After hiking for around 3 hour we will reach Tilwa. At Tilwa we can see a small stream coming down from the hill. Then the trial follows straight to Chuhur Cave. At Chuhur there are some hotels that are open only in the summer season. At Chuhur, there is a dense forest containing pine trees and Bhojpatra, which also suitable for camp site. At the both sides of the trail, are the ridges of hills where we can see blue sheep, musk deer, deer and other endangered wildlife habitats. After hiking for around 2 hours we will reach Toltol. This will be our camping site for tonight.

Day 7
Trek from Toltol to Do-Tarap

The trail of this day passes through the plane area. Small bushes and shrubs can be seen in the area. Along the route of the trail medicinal herb “sibbok thrones” can be found everywhere. Along the trail we will reach the settlement of Lang in around one and half hour from Sisyol. There is a bridge that separates Do from Lang. Walking for around 2 hours through the trail of Do to our left; we will reach Mirbu where a small river flows downwards to get mixed with Do-Tarap River. It is a beautiful place with mythical rocks and caves. With the mesmerizing view of hills, rocks cave, short bushes and wild animal such as blue sheep, we will reach the wide valley of Dho village.

Day 8
Rest day in Do-Tarap

This is the day to enjoy the beautiful village of Do. A special program would also be organized by the team members of our company for your refreshment. Do-Tarap is famous for its settlement in the highest altitude of the world. It exhibits all the characteristics and traits of the true land of Dolpo. Do-Tarap has magnificent monasteries. One of the most famous Gompa in Dolpo is RiboBumpa Monastery, built many years ago, and located in the highlands of Do-Tarap. KakarGompa, also known as the ‘White Crevasse Temple’ is located in the village of Kakar. In the northern highlands, the white structure of Mekhyim Monastery can be seen. Another noticeable feature of this region is the Tathagatastupa. Similarly there is also a DrakmarDewa Monastery in Do-Tarap, which is built into the red cliffs, devoted to the Buddha of the future, Maitreya. Shering Monastery, which is known to locals as ShedingDewa Gompa,is also Nyingma-pa establishment. If we walk for around half an hour to the east of Do-Tarap, we will reach Bon Gompa complex of Shipchok and the red tin-roofed monastery of Dhoro.Crystal Mountain School, Amchi hospital and Allopathic health post are also located in Do-Tarap valley.

Day 9
Trek from Do-Tarap to Numa-La basecamp

Today’s trek is the most outstanding once as you will see different cultures in different settlements of Tokyu (Thaksi) village. Towards the south, shining Numa-La mountain range and just below the range, the monastery of SheringGompa can be seen. We will ascend towards the barren area after leaving Thakshi village. Following the barren land, we will reach Numa-La Base Camp. We will be camping at Numa-La basecamp on this day.

Day 10
Trek from Numa-La basecamp to Dhanighar (BagalaPhedi)

The trail of this day ascends slowly. On the uphill, the panoramic view of Dhaulagiri range can be seen. After ascending for about 4hrs, we will reach the top of beautiful Numa-La. Ascending up is not too steep. We will be descending again from the top. Descending down is less painful. The path then joins Gyambo river which leads to meadow of Baga-La basecamp (Dhanigar).

Day 11
Trek from Baga-La basecamp to Yak Kharka (Dharchok Thang)

On this day we will be heading up towards Baga-La pass. At first, the trail is quite steep and then it eventually becomes pleasant. Windblown prayer flags and fabulous high snow peaks along the way makes you feel romantic on the altitude of 5169m.The descending way leads you to a deep canyon. Following the meadows of Themcha we will reach Yak Kharka (Dharchok Thang).

Day 12
Trek from Yak Kharka to Ringmo village

Wide meadows of Yak Kharka lead you to the narrow path between the forest of pines junipers and cypress. After walking for around 2hr, we will see a magnificent large Rikevillage. The view of Tapriza School can also be seen from here. After hiking for around an hour, through the pine forest,we can see Phoksumdo Lake and Ringmo village situated just beside the lake.The crystal clear Phoksumdo Lake looks like a shining turquoise. You can take time for refreshment and enjoy the deep blue Phoksumdo Lake.

Day 13
Rest Day at Phoksumdo

This day will be a day for resting. We will be visiting the sides of the lake, the temples and bon Monasteries of the area. There will also be a special surprise program conducted by the team of Destination Dolpo on this day.

Day 14
Trek from Ringmo to Pugmo

The trail of this day is straight one through the beautiful jungle. We will be walking through this trail for a while, till we reach a view tower, from where you can behold a breathtaking view of waterfall coming from the Phoksumdo Lake. From there the trail leads slowly steep downwards till Palam. It is the old headquarter of Shey Phoksumdo National Park which was destroyed during the insurgency period. After 15 minutes of walk from there, we will reach Chunuwar where we can find lodge, health post and Amchi hospital. There are facilities of communication and camping sites in this village. The renowned School in Dolpo, Tapriza Secondary School is at the distance of 10minutes from there. We will be having our lunch at Chunuwar. After lunch, we will walk for around 20 minutes to cross the Phoksumdo Lake. On the right side of the river, we can see a ruined army camp. On our way to Pugmo, panoramic view of snow capped peaks and pine trees can be seen. As we reach there, we will be greeted by the locals of this area. There are traditional structured houses and home stays facilities are available. One of the famous Bon Gompa called NamgyalLhakahang is also situated at Pugmo village. It is believed that the NamgyalLhakahangGompa was established in 16th century by Treton Tsewang Tsultrim who is belonged to Treton lineage. The religious Bonpo Chorten and Matrimuye Prayer stones are found everywhere at Pugmo. Good telephone and electricity facilities are also available at the village. As our desire, we will be camping in the grassy meadow or homes stay for the day.

Day 15
Trek from Pugmo to Sangta

It takes around 5 hours to reach Sepka from Pugmo. The trail is good and straight till Ryanchi village. From there the trail ascends and descends with zigzags following the river. While descending, we can see the dense forests and narrow gorge. At Sepka there are some lodges with camping site but we will move ahead around for an hour to get to Sangta wherewe will be spending our night either at a lodge or at a camp.

Day 16
Trek from Sangta to Juphal

The trail of this day is a longer one. We will be descending from Sangta towards Juphal on this day. On the way, there is Sangta tea house. We will be continuing our trek through Ringmo winter settlement called Giyalas to Kageni. From Kageni, the trail leads quite straight to Suligad. The office of Shey Phoksumdo National Park is situated at Suligad. Crossing the suspended bridge of Suligad Army post, we reach the main road. We will reach Juphal either by hiking for around 3 hrs or by taking the jeep We will spend the night at hotel of Juphal.

Day 17
Flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj and to Kathmandu

As per your flight booking you will be transferred to airport of Juphal to fly to Nepalgunj by our representative and from there; you will be taking another flight to fly back to Kathmandu. Once you reach Kathmandu, our representative will receive you and help to drop you to your designated hotel. You may have free time to explore around the ancient streets of the Thamel and buy some souvenirs for your loved ones back in your country.

Day 18
Leisure day

This is your well deserved leisure day. You can have refreshment time in your hotel or explore the different sites of Kathmandu. There are various restaurants around the ancient streets of Thamel where you may opt for trying traditional Nepali cuisines.

Day 19
Final departure

This day marks as the last day of your stay in Nepal. With a big smile about the wonderful experiences that you had in Nepal, our representative will help to drop you to the Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure.

Depending on the trek and on the number of people in the group, the average price per day & per person will range between $90 – $110. (Flight and trekking permit not included)
