Phoksundo Trek - 16 Days

Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, a representative of Destination Dolpo will receive you from the Tribhuvan International airport and drop you in your designated hotel. As this is the first day, you will have time on your own. In the evening, our manager will brief you about the trip and your stay in Nepal.

Day 2
Sightseeing in Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur is one of the most popular places of the world which is listed as a world heritage sites. There you can see many ancient historical temples and traditional handicrafts. After Bhaktapur, you will return back to the hotel for lunch and take some rest. In the afternoon you have a flight to Nepalgunj where you will be spending a night.

Day 3
Fly via Nepalganj to Juphal, trek to Kageni

There will be a flight to Dolpa early in the morning. The airplane will drop you at Juphal airport. It is the starting point of your trek. From Juphal, you can either take jeep or go on foot. The trail is downhill until Kaligauda and then you have a straight way till Suligad. There is a suspended bridge which you have to cross in order to reach Shey Phoksundo lake while the straight path leads to Dunai, the Headquarter of Dolpa till where the jeeps runs. After crossing the suspended bridge there is an Army camp which we have to pass in order to reach the Shey Phoksundo National Park Head Office. There is an entry permit of Rs 3390 per person as you will be entering the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The path afterwards is steady and in some places you can see exposed rocky section and landslides spots. Our stop will be at Kageni which is our first camp spot.

Day 4
Trek from Kageni to Sindak camp spot

Walking around 20 minutes from Kageni, you will reach Jyalas, the winter settlement of Rigmo village consisting of basic houses with prayer flags. From there it takes around half an hour to reach at Sangta, where you can rest in the grassy meadow and see rocky jungles along with white monkeys and deer. Then the trail leads you through the jungle and a little uphill and downhill till Tsepka village where you will have lunch. After lunch, you need to cross a river through the suspended bridge to the west side of jungle containing different tree species until camp spot at Sindak.

Day 5
Trek from Sindak to Tapriza School Saijol

This trail is also a narrow gorge flowing by the side. Crossing of the rivers, ascending and descending of the highlands are common till next camping site at Tapriza School. Lunch will be at Renji village, from where you have to cross a river and then follow the same river bank with tall pine forest by the sides. Sumduwa, the Army camp can be seen on the high ground across the river on the left. From Sumduwa it takes around 20 minutes to reach at Tapriza Secondary School.

Day 6
Rest at Tapriza School

This day will be a special day for you as you can observe the daily activities of the school from morning to evening like the morning prayer, school assembly, teaching and learning activities, etc. After dinner the school will be organizing a special cultural program for the visitors.

Day 7
Trek from Tapriza School to Ringmo Phoksumdo Lake

This day you have to take a trail to Rikhe village. It takes around an hour to reach the village from Tapriza. From there you can see the beautiful scenery of the Phoksundo waterfall. Then the trail go up until Punduwa, the summer settlement the Renji villagers. Along the way you will have a lunch break which is very close to Bagala Base camp. The scenery is very beautiful and on the way you can see many flocks of blue sheep. Then the trail is straight until Ringmo Village where the Phoksundo Lake is situated.

Day 8
Rest day / hike

This day is very special as you can take a day off from a tiresome hiking. There is a special surprise on this day which will be given by the Destination Dolpo team. You will have free time to explore the lakeside or the Bonpos Monasteries called Thasung Tsoling Gompa which is one of the best Gompa of this region. In the afternoon you can also tour Rigmo village, spend some time and get the chance to taste the local food. You can also enjoy the local cultural dance after dinner.

Day 9
Trek from Ringmo to Pugmo

The trail of this day is straight one through the beautiful jungle. You will be walking through this trail for a while, till we reach a view tower, from where you can behold a breath taking view of waterfall coming from the Phoksumdo Lake. From there the trail leads slowly steep downwards till Palam. It is the old headquarter of Shey Phoksumdo National Park which was destroyed during the insurgency period. After 15 minutes of walk from there, you will reach Chunuwar where lodging, health post, Amchi hospital and camping sites are available. Tapriza Secondary School is just 10 minute ahead. You will have lunch at Chunuwar. After lunch, short visit at Tapriza School to say goodbye to all the school family. Then you have to walk for around 20 minutes and cross the Phoksumdo River. Little further you can see an army camp. On your way to Pugmo, panoramic view of snow capped peaks and pine trees can be seen. As we reach there at Pugmo village, you will be greeted by the local people. The traditional structured houses and home stays facilities are available. One of the famous Bon Gompa called Namgyal Lhakahang is also situated at Pugmo village. It is believed that the Namgyal Lhakahang Gompa was established in 16th century by Treton Tsewang Tsultrim who belonged to Treton lineage. The religious Bonpo Chorten and Matrimuye Prayer stones are found everywhere at Pugmo. Telephone and electricity facilities are also available at the village. As per the groups will, you will be either camping in the grassy meadow or in home stay for the day.

Day 10
Trek from Pugmo to Renji

After breakfast the group can choose ether to visit Pumer Gompa or Daja Alp. After the visit you will head to Renji which takes around one and half hours from Pugmo. The trail is good and straight till Renji village.

Day 11
Trek from Renji to Santa

From Renji camp, the trail ascends and descends with zigzags following the river. While descending, we can see the dense forests and narrow gorge. At Tsepka there are some lodges with camping site but we will move ahead around for an hour to get to Sangta where we will be spending our night at a camp.

Day 12
Trek from Santa to Juphal

From the Sangta we follow same way back to Juphal.

Day 13
Flight to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu

The Dolpo flight is always early morning and we will be ready early morning flight to Nepalgunj. From the Juphal Airport to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu we follow same way flight.

Day 14
Kathmandu (leisure day)

This is your well deserved leisure day. You can have refreshment time in your hotel or explore the different sites of Kathmandu. There are various restaurants around the ancient streets of Thamel where you may opt for trying traditional Nepali cuisines.

Day 15
Flight back to Zurich (final departure day)

This day marks as the last day of your stay in Nepal. With a big smile about the wonderful experiences that you had in Nepal, our representative will help to drop you to the Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure. We expect for more visits from you in the coming days in Nepal.

Depending on the trek and on the number of people in the group, the average price per day & per person will range between $90 – $110. (Flight and trekking permit not included)

Trekking permit costs: 
– Lower Dolpo : $20 per day
– Upper Dolpo : $500 for 10 days
